Kachina Wetlands Field Trip,
Saturday, March 15
Phyllis Kegley, leaderI plan to promote this field trip in the Kachina Village and Mountainaire areas in hopes of getting more of the “locals” interested in this area. I hope that Audubon members will come, too, and bring their scopes and birding knowledge. If you would like to help with this, please let me know. Here are some of the postings from the Sightings on the NAAS webpage from mid-March, 2007: Lots of Northern Shovelers, Redheads, Gadwalls, Canada Geese and Red-winged Blackbirds; Also, Green-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, American Wigeon, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Pied-billed Grebe, Ruddy Duck, a Red-tailed Hawk, and assorted passerines. But one never knows what might be there, especially considering this snowy winter.
Meet at Raymond Park, just off the I-17/Kachina Village Exit at 8:00 am. Dress for cold and wind. Call Phyllis at (928) 214-0415 for more info.
Carbon-Neutral Field Trip in Flag
Saturday, April 5
Lauren Harter, leader
Join NAU biology student, Lauren Harter, on a field trip to the Rio de Flag in Flagstaff. Since Willow Bend Environmental Education Center is near stops for both the gold and green Mountain Line buses, we will begin and end the field trip there. In between, we'll walk along the FUTS trail to the wetlands below I-40. Total walking distance will be a bit over 2 miles. We’ll look for resident songbirds and early spring migrants as well as waterfowl and raptors at the wetlands.Take the bus, ride a bike, or take a hike to meet us at 7:45 a.m. at Willow Bend, 703 E. Sawmill Road. Bring a binocular, water, snacks, etc. Return time to Willow Bend will be around noon. Call Lauren for more details at 928 773 4866 or e-mail lbh32@nau.edu
Page Springs Water Sampling for Insect Diversity
Saturday, April 12 and Saturday, May 3
Dave Smith, leader
Dave Smith is a new NAAS board member and a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He will help us collect, observe, and identify the aquatic insects found in the area of Oak Creek near the Page Springs hatchery. We will discuss what the particular assemblage of insects we find implies about the water quality in that part of Oak Creek.
Collecting gear will be provided. Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear wadeable shoes, or better yet, waders (especially for the April trip). Better still, encourage kids to come along---they seem immune to cold water in creeks. Flagstaff participants meet in Flagstaff at the south end of the Wal-Mart parking lot (a stone's throw from the Big Five store) at 7:30 a.m. to depart
by 7:45. Sedona and Verde Valley participants, meet Flagstaffers at our ramada at Page Springs at 9 a.m. Along with waders and such, bring optics, drinking water, snacks, and so on. You are strongly encouraged to call Dave at928 527 1229 ahead of time, though drop-in participants will not be turned away. Return time to the ramada will be at 11 a.m.
