NAAS Chapter Memberships

Several years ago National Audubon Society (National) notified its chapters of a major change in its long-standing program of dues sharing with local chapters. The impact of the change is that a far greater proportion of dues that members pay is being retained by National which severely curtails the resources available from National to local chapters to carry out their programs.

The National dues sharing allocation is by no means Northern Arizona Audubon Society’s (NAAS) sole source of funds as those of you who have participated in the annual Birdathon, supported Audubon Adventures, and the Annual Gift campaigns are well aware, but it has always been our largest source.

Locally NAAS annually publishes its newsletter “BlackHawk Watch” five times a year, organizes membership meeting programs in Sedona and Flagstaff, runs birding trips in the area as well as regional natural history field trips, sponsors Environmental Education programs in local classrooms, and manages area Christmas Bird Counts. We are also leaders in northern Arizona conservation activities, particularly those devoted to preserving wildlife habitat. All these activities cost money.

Therefore, NAAS has instituted membership dues of $12.00 for one year, $22.00 for two, and $30.00 for three years, per household, and 100% of these funds are devoted to NAAS programs. Only NAAS members will receive the “BlackHawk Watch” newsletter in the mail. Members will also, if they wish, become part of an e-mail system for sharing pressing conservation issues that arise between issues of the newsletter.

NAAS also encourages members to retain their National memberships in order to participate in conservation and habitat protection programs at the national level and to receive the “Audubon Magazine”. National members will only receive a schedule of NAAS activities twice a year.
