Rare Bird Sightings

I think I found a rare bird - what should I do?

What is a rare bird?
A "rare bird" is many things to many people. Generally, a bird is rare if it occurs in a geographic region less than annually.

Reporting Rare Birds

Reporting rare birds requires your best birding skills. Focus intently on details, make thorough written descriptive notes, take pictures if possible. Getting into the habit of making lists and field notes not only improves your own skill set, it makes you an asset to the conservation community and to the birds!

Take a quick look at the rare bird form for an idea of things to consider.

If your bird is not "rare", but is out of region, is new for you, is out of season or has displayed some unusual behavior that you find interesting, report it to the Sightings page or the NAAS E-group. Some of us find unusual aspects of common birds more interesting than the occurence of a 'rare' bird. Above all - share with the group!
